For the 17th edition of the URBAN Photo Awards, we are proud to present the Special Prize curated by one of the most distinguished voices in contemporary British documentary photography: Mark Power.

A member of Magnum Photos since 2007, Power has spent over four decades developing a rigorous and contemplative practice, built around long-term projects that explore the relationship between landscape, local culture and social change. His images, made with the deliberate slowness that large-format cameras demand, never rest at the surface: they open onto the space between description and imagination, between how places look and how they are remembered and evoked.

The Mark Power Special Prize – Beyond the Surface is a curatorial award that recognises projects of strong visual coherence and a sustained engagement with landscape understood as a layering of the real — attentive to the tensions, often quietly present, that run through spaces and the lives that inhabit them.

Power will select up to five projects to be exhibited alongside his own work at Magazzino 26 in Trieste, bringing together work that are firmly grounded in the real world while remaining open to more elusive and evocative dimensions.
