The Up There<\/em> project, by Italian author Beniamino Pisati<\/strong>, wins the first prize in the Projects & Portfolio<\/strong> section.<\/p>\n

The final podium of the eleventh edition of URBAN was unveiled on Saturday 24 October 2020 <\/strong>at the award ceremony of the contest at the auditorium of the Revoltella<\/strong> Museum<\/strong>, during Trieste Photo Days<\/strong><\/a> international festival. President of the jury Alex Webb<\/strong> and Rebecca Norris Webb<\/strong>, live streaming from New York for a long and interesting speech (you can rewatch it here<\/strong><\/a>), announced the winners and motivated their choices.<\/p>\n

Harry Giglio – Approaching Storm<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cWhat I like about this photograph is the sense of disconnection\u201d, says Alex Webb<\/strong> of Harry Giglio’s work. \u201cA man\u2014perhaps a cobbler in front of his shop\u2014calmly reads his newspaper on a quintessentially American street, while a shaft of lightning streaks across the sky in the background. Once can\u2019t help but think: How can this man be utterly unaware of the drama behind him?<\/em>\u201d
\n\u201cThis photo\u201d, continues Webb, \u201calso embraces a fundamental characteristic of photography: the medium\u2019s innate ability to bring together disparate elements\u2014seemingly contradictory notions\u2014within a single frame.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beniamino Pisati – Up There<\/p><\/div>\n

Rebecca Norris Webb<\/strong> about the Beniamino Pisati’s Up There<\/em> project says: \u201cLike the work of Luigi Ghirri and of his close friend, Gianni Celati\u2014the latter born in Sondrio\u2014Beniamino Pisati\u2019s photographs of the Valtellina Valley in the Alps share a deep affection for the Italian landscape. Looking at Pisati\u2019s photographs, one can\u2019t help but wonder if we\u2019re glimpsing a vanishing world\u2014with its cows, whose cheese tastes of the alpine grasses they feed on, and its farmers, whose traditional hats echo the peaks of the surrounding mountains. Through Pisati\u2019s eyes, it\u2019s as if we\u2019re seeing this remote, rural landscape for \u201cthe first and last time,\u201d to quote Ghirri.\u201d<\/p>\n

URBAN Book Award
\n<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Street photographer Nick Turpin<\/strong>, juror of the Book Award<\/strong> section, was also in streaming from London to comment on the winning project he chose from the over 160 competing: Journey to the Lowlands<\/em> by Valeria Sacchetti<\/strong>, present at the award ceremony, an evocative journey in white and black in the lowlands of Emilia.<\/p>\n

Best Author
\n<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

For the second year in a row, Belgian photographer Alain Schroeder<\/strong>, who was also present at the awards ceremony, was named the Best Author<\/strong> of the URBAN Photo Awards. A dutiful recognition for the quality and versatility of his numerous projects set in the four corners of the world (three of his reportages about the two Koreas<\/strong><\/a> are on display at the Civic Museum of Oriental Art in Trieste until 6 January 2021).<\/p>\n

New Buildings Prize<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Rebeka Legovi\u0107 <\/strong>was also awarded for her photo of the UniCredit Tower in Milan Porta Nuova<\/strong><\/a> in the special prize New Buildings<\/strong>, born from the partnership between URBAN and Matrix4Design<\/strong> and dedicated to the icons of architecture that have changed the face of cities in the last ten years. The winning photo was selected by Matrix4Design editor Andrea Boni<\/strong> and photographer Federica Nardese<\/strong>. \u201cThe artist,\u201d they say about their choice, \u201chas tried her hand at representing an iconic building, symbol of great urban renewal, revealing her ability to find a new point of view, moving away from what has already been seen to propose her personal surrealist vision\u201d.<\/p>\n
