Gabriele Micalizzi

Gabriele Micalizzi (Milan, 1984) is an Italian photojournalist. His work focuses on analysing and representing the social condition of individuals, and their relationship with the context they live in.

After completing his art studies, in the early 2000s he produced his firsts reportages on Italian news, which led in 2010 to the creation of the project “Italians: The Myth”, based on the identity crisis of Italian society.

In 2009 he began his career as a war photographer, which led him to document, in 2011, the clashes during the Arab Spring in Tunisia and Egypt, which he continued to deal with during the following years.

In 2016 he won the Master of Photography contest and began his frequent travels to Libya and Gaza. In 2019, during the Kurdish offensives in Baghuz, he is hit by a RPG and his Leica camera saves his sight. During his recovery in Italy, he began researching and investigating on Milan’s problematic crime condition, and he witnessed and photographed the COVID-19 pandemic in northern Italy.

In 2021 he travelled to Iraq to document the destruction made by ISIS, and the following year, he followed the war in Donbass for the WSJDie Zeit and Le Monde. In 2023 he documented the flooding of Derna in Libya, the migrant routes between Libya and Tunisia and the situation in Israel soon after the terrorist attacks.

In 2024 he travels to Jakarta and India for a photographic and socio-anthropological research project on the phenomenon of overpopulation. His images have been published in many prestigious newspapers, including The New York TimesThe GuardianThe New YorkerThe Wall Street Journal and many more.
